The great gold crown depicted on the reverse was originally made for Charles II and is still used for the coronation ceremony. Below the crown, the garter from the Most Noble Order of the Garter is depicted. The Order is the premier Order of Great Britain and one of the most ancient in Europe. It comprises the Sovereign and 26 Knights only.
The Garter, as shown on the coin, encircles a 70th birthday greeting to Her Majesty and is flanked by English roses.
