    Notes:

By 1850, with convicts no longer sent to Australia, the colony was rapidly growing into a nation of free settlers. In response to the everyday hardships faced in their new environment, the people of this great southern land developed a pioneering spirit that was uniquely Australian. At first they clung to the mostly fertile fringes of the continent, but quickly began to expand their horizons, moving into the harsh interior in search of new opportunity.
Discoveries in transport, communications, agriculture and industry were developed, bringing the world closer and improving the quality of life.
To simply survive in these times took immense courage and commitment. Indeed, these intrepid Australians are much more than pioneers of the land - they are pioneers of Australia's collective identity. This masterpieces in silver set pays tribute to some of the more notable people, places and events in our colonial history - including Elizabeth Macarthur in her role in the development of the wool industry; Colonel William Light, Surveyor-General of South Australia; the discovery of gold; Cobb & Co in Australia; and Charles Todd and the Overland Telegraph.
