Such is the rarity of a Brilliant Uncirculated quality 1923 halfpenny that there has not been a recorded sale for many years. The valuation shown in the above table is therefore, at best, a rough guess as the market has not been tested.

The real mintage for the 1923 halfpenny is approximately 15,000 coins. Most of the 1,113,600 coins shown in the Sydney Mint records for that year were actually struck with 1922 dated dies. This coin is the key date in the Australian halfpenny coin series.

The level of publicity associated with this popular coin in recent years has resulted in a surge in demand which has pushed up the price. Like the 1930 penny, in many respects, the 1923 halfpenny is a numismatic phenomenon - on the surface, the value of the coin appears to be higher than values which would normally be associated with a coin with a known mintage of around 15,000 examples.
