Notes:

The reverse design of this commemorative $5 coin was the result of an Australia-wide competition held during late 1991. The winner was John Skillington, a teacher from Albury in N.S.W.

In response to the competition brief, which called for designs reflecting Australia's role in the space industry and the benefits of space technology to our lifestyles, his design features the form of the Southern Cross as a suggestion of satellites orbiting above and scanning a globally rendered Australian continent.
The uncirculated version of this coin was issued at face value, mounted unsealed, on a cardboard presentation card with fold-out tabs permitting the card to stand by itself for display. The text on the card reads as follows:

Space. Since the dawn of time man has looked to the night sky with wonderment and fascination, drawn to the stars with almost mystic curiosity.
The standard proof version of the silver 1992 Space Five Dollar coin was distributed, encapsulated, in a square silver leatherette, hinged lid case protected by a special presentation box. The coin was also included in a limited issue International Space Year Coin and Stamp Collectors Edition.
