Since 1923, New Zealand has been responsible for the administration of the Ross Dependency, a sector of the Antarctic comprising approximately 440,000 square kilometres of land and 337,000 square kilometres of permanent ice shelf. Lying directly to the south with the approach via the Ross Sea, it is this sector which provided explorers with their first road to the pole.
The Ross Dependency and the Ross Sea gained their names from the man credited with leading the first expedition through the belt of pack ice which guards the continent. Captain James Clark Ross, a noted English polar explorer, led an expedition whith two specially strengthened sailing vessels, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which in two separate assaults in 1841 and 1842, made the breakthrough which was to create the 'highway' which men would traverse in order to penetrate to the very heart of the Antarctic.
