The reverse design depicts the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in the Bay of Islands on February 6, 1840, a pact between the Maori people of New Zealand and the British Crown, allowing all immigrants to live in New Zealand alongside its Maori people. As such, the Treaty should be seen as New Zealand's foundation document - a 'living' document on which the New Zealand of today has been built.
