The STOCKMAN

The Stockman embodies tenacity. His wide-brimmed hat pulled low to shade his eyes from the blaze of the midday sun, he slouches easy on his horse as the mob makes its way from one waterhole to the next

From the remote northern reaches down to the southern high country, sheep and cattle grazing land has been home to the Stockman. He's Clancy of the Overflow, envied by his city cousin. He's the Man from Snowy River, skilled in the saddle and ready to take on a challenge, man or beast. His laconic humour is the result of long, slow tradition, the lonely rigours of his task honing speech to a spare art.

The Stockman were few in number until gold discoveries opened up the inland into the latter part of the nineteenth century. They came then to epitomise a part of the national identity: the hard-working Australian learning to understand a magnificent, uncompromising landscape.
