BULLOCK TEAMS

The dignified gait, the slow heavy progress, the patient courage and the united strength of Australia's bullock teams played an important role in the working life of the nation. They epitomised the quality of endurance that drove the colonial dream.

Katharine Susannah Prichard immortalised the majestic, ponderous strain of the teams in her novel Working Bullocks, where she captured the majesty of the beasts, and the passion of the men who drove them. She wrote of the crack of the bullocky's whip, the sound of his voice across the morning's clean air and the 'chinkle of bullock chains as the team trailed slowly, up hill and down, to the landing.' Prichard set her teams among the giant Karri forests of Western Australia, where for decades the powerful patience of the bullock teams succoured the spirit of the settlers.

In the settling-in years when squatters set out from town with just a dray and a half-dozen beasts, they relied - totally and with gritty faith - on the strength and endurance of the bullock teams.
