Australian Two Cents

Between 1966 and 1984 the obverse portrait shows a young profile of Queen Elizabeth designed by Arnold Machin. In 1985, this was replaced by a new effigy with a more pronounced crown, designed by Raphael Maklouf.

Stuart Devlin's reverse design depicts Northern Australia's frilled lizard in a typical posture it takes up when scared or annoyed, frills spread and ready to bite. The lizard can grow to 76cm in length, over half of which is tail. The design shows the figure 2, 7mm high, placed to the right of the frill with the designer's initials, SD, between the animal's right front and left rear claws.

Mint Rolls contain 50 coins. In 1967 and 1968, the rolls were wrapped by the Reserve Bank. In the other years, the Royal Australian Mint wrapped the coins. In later years, strong plastic bags containing $25 (1,250 coins) were more commonly used for transport.

One Cent Blank
Struck on a bronze, one cent blank, the date is missing off the edge of the smaller piece. The crowned effigy of the Queen indicates that the coins were struck between 1985 and 1991. A number of specimens have reached the marketplace, uncirculated specimens sold for around $350 in 1995.
