In 1953, the world watched as a young Elizabeth bravely assumed the throne. The following year, the new Queen made the first of her many visits to Australia, where she was greeted by enthusiastic crowds across the country.

The visit was commemorated with a special florin. The design, by William Leslie Bowles, is an abstract reference to the unity of Australia and the 'Mother Country'. However, the depiction of the lion and kangaroo side by side was derided by some as a 'zoo token', making the coin itself somewhat less of a triumph than the visit it celebrated.
