Notes:

This coin was not released individually. It was struck for inclusion in a special Masterpieces in Silver collector proof set entitled Coins of the 20th Century - Milestones released by the Canberra Mint. The reverse design is struck from a modified die used to produce the 1934-35 Melbourne Centenary Florin.

As Australia emerged from the depression, plans were made to celebrate the centenaries of both Melbourne and the first settlement in what was to become Victoria, at Portland Bay.

To raise money for the festivities, a dual-dated commemorative florin was released at a premium price of three shillings. Despite the attractive design by George Kruger Gray, with its mounted figure representing progress, the Australian public proved reluctant to part with those extra shillings above the coin's face value. The promotion was not a success and many coins went back into the melting pot, enhancing the collector value of those that were sold.
