This coin was not released individually. It was struck for inclusion in a special Masterpieces in Silver collector proof set entitled Coins of the 20th Century - Milestones released by the Canberra Mint. The reverse design is struck from a modified die used to produce the 1927 Parliament House Florin.
Along with the debate that preceded Federation, there was an equally fiery one regarding the location of the new capital. Canberra was selected as a 'neutral' site and given its own Commonwealth territory.

With the opening of Parliament House in 1927 by the Duke of York (later King George VI), all eyes turned to Canberra as the focus of political life. The event inspired the release of Australia's first commemorative coin, with a reverse design by George Kruger Gray. The 1927 florin is regarded by many numismatists as the most attractive of all our commemorative coins.
