The legislation calling for a distinctive, all-Australian currency, was passed in 1901, when the various states and colonies were united as a Federation. As the selection and surveying of the site for the new capital, Canberra, continued, plans for the new coins were given a lower priority.

Finally, in 1910, the first silver coins were struck in London. The reverse design, by W. H. J. Blakemore, shows the coat of arms granted to Australia by Edward VII in 1908. By chance or design, the choice of the kangaroo and the emu was symbolic for a new nation wanting to forge ahead - neither nimal is capable of walking backwards!
