Shirley Strickland
Australia's first female
track and field
gold medalist.

Shirley Strickland was the first Australian athlete to win gold at successive Olympics and the first woman in history to retain an individual Olympic title. Shirley graduated from UWA with a Bachelor of Science with Honours in physics and started hurdling in 1947, winning both Western Australian and Australian titles in 1948.

At the London Olympics that year she won bronze in the 80m hurdles and 100m sprint and silver as part of the 100m relay team. This was just a taste of the success to come. At the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 she produced her best form, winning gold in the 80m hurdles (in the world record time of 10.9 seconds) and a bronze in the 100m.

For the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, at age 31, many critics said she lacked the dash to win gold. She was to prove the sceptics wrong, winning gold in the hurdles with a world record time of 10.7, almost two yards ahead of second place. She won another gold in the 4 x 100m relay in the world record time of 44.5 seconds. In 1955 she won the Helms Award as the outstanding Australian athlete, and was awarded an M.B.E. in 1957.
