Murray Rose began swimming at the tender age of 18 months. By age 10 he was showing the promise of a champion, winning the NSW State Swimming Titles in his age group. At 15, he made his first-class swimming debut at the 1954 Australian Swimming Championships.
He was selected for the 1956 Olympics, competing in the 400m and 1500m freestyle and 4 x 200m freestyle. He won 3 gold medals. At the Rome Olympics in 1960, Rose won Gold in the 400m Freestyle, Silver in the 1500m Freestyle and Bronze in the 4 x 200m Relay. He was the first male swimmer to win consecutive 400m Freestyle events at the Olympics (and remains the only male to do so).
Including his impressive Commonwealth Games achievements, Rose broke 15 world records during his career. Rose did not swim at the 1964 Olympics, but within weeks of these games, he clipped 4.1 seconds off the 880 yard Freestyle world record at the US and Canadian National Championships respectively. His Olympic tally of 4 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal is still the highest achieved by an Australian male athlete.
