Dawn Fraser learnt to swim at the age of four. By 1956, at age 19, she was showing the style which would take her to the top, winning the 110 yards Freestyle at the Australian Titles. The career that followed spanned a decade, including three Olympic and two Commonwealth Games.
She was the first swimmer to win the same event (100m Freestyle) in three consecutive Olympic Games; was the first female to swim the 100m Freestyle in less than one minute; held 39 world records, held the 100m Freestyle record for 16 years, and won eight Olympic medals (four gold and four silver), more than any other Australian athlete in any sport.
A brilliant swimmer, she trained hard and seemed to play even harder, with her carefree spirit often landing her in trouble with the authorities. After the Tokyo games, Dawn Fraser was suspended from swimming for marching in the Games Opening Ceremony and wearing an unofficial swinsuit. There was public outcry but Dawn's career wea effectively over.
