This coin was not intended for circulation. It is the sixth in a series of eight ten dollar coins issued between 1985 and 1993 displaying the Coat of Arms of Australian States and Territories.

The proof version was encapsulated and distributed in a hinged lid presentation case while the uncirculated, speciman coin was released sealed on a large, fold-out card and housed inside a special presentation envelope.

At the International Coin Fair held in Hobart during May 1991, a limited edition issue of 1,000 proof coins were sold, each accompanied by a specially numbered certificate. Valuation details of this coin fair issue are shown in the following table:

Tasmania's Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms of the island State was granted by King George V in 1917 and the description of the Arms embodies the motto, Ubertas et Fidelitas (Fertility and Faithfulness). The supporters in the Arms are two Tasmanian tigers (Thylacinus cynocephalus), which in modern times have been found only in Tasmania and are now possibly extinct.
The official grant is worded as follows: George the Fifth by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India:

Whereas for the greater honour and distinction of Our State of Tasmania We are desirous that Armorial Ensigns and Supporters should be assigned for that State: Know Ye therefore that We of our Princely Grace and Special Favour have granted and assigned and by these Presents do grant and assign the following Armorial Ensigns for the said State of Tasmania that is to say:- Quarterly Gules and barry wavy Argent and Azure a Fesse of the second charged with a Ram statant proper between in gief a Garb and a Thunderbolt and in base four Apples and a Branch of Hops all Or, For the Crest On a Wreath Argent and Gules: A Lion statant Gules resting the dexter fore paw on a Spade and a Pick-axe in saltire proper: And for Supporters, on either side a Tasmanian Tiger proper, with the motto "Ubertas et Fidelitas" as the same are in the painting heruunto annexed more plainly - depicted to be bourne for the said State of Tasmania upon Seals Shields, Banners or otherwise according to the Laws of Arms.

The floral emblem of the State is the Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus), proclaimed in 1962. There are no bird or faunal emblems or officially proclaimed colours. Representative sporting teams wear green and gold.
