Notes:
In March, 1992, Spink & Son (London) achieved a world record price for an Australian coin when an Extremely Fine 1920 Sydney Mint sovereign sold for £116,220 (sterling). On the day, this translated to an Australian price of $267,173. The coin was estimated to sell for between £20,000 - £25,000. The price is now regarded as excessive. A similar coin sold at the Noble Numismatic Auctions in March, 1996 for $148,500.
Less than 10 of these coins are known to exist despite the high mintage figure. The majority of the 1920 'S' sovereigns were melted down shortly after being struck and those which were issued in that year contained an earlier date.
In 1999, the Canberra mint released a .999 Silver Two Dollar frosted proof coin with a reverse design incorporating the reverse design of the 1920 'S' sovereign as part of a six coin Masterpieces in Silver set.
