Notes:The 1946 shilling is the only silver coin struck for
circulation by the Perth Mint. After assisting the war effort by
producing copper pennies and halfpennies from 1940, the Commonwealth
Treasury sought to give the Perth Mint experience in working with
silver. As a result, shillings were minted in Perth in 1946. However,
the experience was short-lived and, once more, copper coins only, were
produced in Perth.
The Perth Mint commemorated the production of the 1946 shilling by releasing a 2 ounce bullion silver coin and medallion pair in 1998.
