1999 Coins of the 20th Century - Memories Masterpieces in Silver

The 1999 Coins of the 20th Century - Memories - Masterpieces in Silver set issued by the Royal Australian Mint consists of a six proof, .999 silver coins with reverses showing original designs of Australian pre-decimal coins.

The 6 coins included in the set are:

  • 1999 Two Dollars - 1920 Sovereign,
  • 1999 Dollar - 1940 Shilling,
  • 1999 Fifty Cents - 1918 Sixpence,
  • 1999 Twenty Cent - 1942 Threepence,
  • 1999 Ten Cent - 1930 Penny and
  • 1999 Five Cent - 1939 Halfpenny. A total of 15,000 sets were offered for sale. Each coin in the set is encapsulated. The set is housed in a purple leatherette presentation case.

    The approach of a new era often beckons us to review our past. The 20th century has seen courage, despair, and nature conquered, but also great human achievement. Some remarkable and tragic events include the outbreak of two World Wars, the Great Depression, Kingsford Smith and Mawson's quests, and the exceptional singing career of Dame Nellie Melba. Overall, the triumph of the human spirit has left its stamp on the last 100 years.

    Almost a quarter of a century of Australia's history is represented by the coins in this collection. A period marked by the economic extremes of the "Roaring Twenties" and the Great Depression; men and women in wars while families waited at home for news; and triumphs over the earth and skies.

    It was a time when the Sydney Mint itself felt the effects of declining gold production in NSW, closing in 1926 after a history of more than 70 years striking in excess of 150 million gold coins.

    Each of the six coins in this stunning collection bears dates or mintmarks that reflect their place in Australian coinage, cultural and historic heritage. They offer the collector faithful representations of the original coins' reverse designs, and an insight into their place in this remarkable century.
