Towards the new millennium, the discussion of what it means to be Australian has intensified and blossomed. Vigorous, open and optimistic, the emergent national identity contains within its boundaries the ideas and achievements that shaped its history. Our heroes, those whose abilities drew the praise of fellow Australians, gave focus to the hopes and desires of a young nation.
The performance of artists, writers and sports people were the images that took Australians' breath away. From such images there gradually emerged an idea that Australia had, indeed, a national identity that is quite unlike any other.
The 1996 Masterpieces in Silver commemorates those people, the performances and events that hold privileged positions in the shaping of Australia's national identity: artist Tom Roberts, writer Henry Lawson, the Stockman, singer Dame Nellie Melba, and Horse Racing. Such is the panorama of complex forces that have given focus to the national heart and mind.
