1989 Masterpieces in Silver

The second of what has become an annual Masterpieces in Silver issue by the Royal Australian Mint, this set consists of 5 Proof Sterling Silver (.925 Fine) 1989 dated 'restrikes' of Australia's five commemorative 50 cent coins issued between 1970 and 1988, together with a silver ingot stamped with the issue number of the set. The reverse designs commemorate:
  • Captain James Cook,
  • Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee,
  • Charles & Diane's Wedding,
  • Australia's Bicentenary and
  • Brisbane's Commonwealth Games. Of the 25,000 sets offered for sale, 2,500 were released at the Sydney International Coin Fair held in November, 1989.

  • Notes:

The apparent lack of popularity of the 1989 masterpieces in silver set has resulted in many sets being broken up with the coins being repackaged and sold individually.
