This set represents the annual release by the Royal Australian Mint of proof versions of Australia's circulating coins. The 1988 set consists of eight coins:
the newly released Two Dollars.
With a total of 104,000 sets, the 1988 bicentenial proof set has the highest number of any of the Australian Proof set issues. The eight coins were housed, sealed in a see-both-sides hard plastic case which was the same size as that used in previous years for the seven coin sets. The case was presented in a special leatherette protective wallet.
