    Notes:

This set marks a turning point in the Royal Australian Mint's attitude to the annual proof set issue. Although there had been a significant increase in the number of sets sold the previous year, there was only a small increase in the issue price of each set. In 1981, the number of proof sets released was over double that of two year's earlier and the issue price of each set more than doubled as well. The result was not immediately felt until a year or so later when values of the set plummeted when it became clear there were more sets in the marketplace than collectors wished to own. The situation continued for a further two years until mintage restrictions were tightened in 1984.
