Notes:

Hopwood was sentenced to 14 years transportation to Van Diemens Land. He was granted a free parton in 1846 and moved to the Murray District in 1850. He saw the possibilities for profit in the river trade caused by the formidable problem of crossing the Murray and founded Echuca in 1853 when he began his ferry service.
