Bank of New South Wales Banknotes: 1826-1850

In 1826, Governor Brisbane's experiment with a dollar based exchange system was abandoned when the English authorities intervened to re-establish the sterling system of pounds, shillings and pence. The Bank of New South Wales issued new notes with denominations between £50 and 5 shillings. The example shown at right is a submission sample for the proposed £5 note. Circulation issues contained a number of modifications.
The designs on the notes issued in 1826 would be used for the next 24 years until 1850. Specimens of each denomination, designed by Joseph Hyde Potts, are shown below. The reverse of each note is plain.
