Bank of New South Wales Banknotes: 1819-1824
After two years of operation, the design of the five banknote denominations on issue by the Bank of New South Wales was modified. The design of the notes is attributed to John Austin, an engraver engaged by the Bank in 1818. Specimens of each denomination, are shown below. The reverse of each note is plain.

Slight variations occur as the bank obtained reprints of blank note forms from its printers. At right, the top note has additional lines for the cashier's notation and signature which do not appear on the lower note.

A large number of forgeries of this note were found to be circulating in the colony in 1820. The counterfeiters were never discovered.
