Private Colonial Notes The Bank of Melbourne


The Bank of Melbourne was not really a bank, but a general store which issued pre-printed prommissory notes. The notes, engraved in New York, had a look and feel similar to real private banknote issues of the period.

The one pound example shown above was issued in January, 1857.
