Colonial Notes Archers Gilles & Co.,
Launceston & Port Phillip

The firm of Archers Gilles & Co. were merchants and bankers who operated for a three year period between 1840 and 1843, trading in Launceston, Tasmania and in the Port Phillip district of Victoria.

The business did not thrive and by 1842, dubious practices were being employed in an attempt to keep the business afloat. Eventually, a series of economic reverses led to the partnership being acquired by the Union Bank of Australia Limited.

The partnership is believed to have operated as a banking company, issuing notes under both its own name, or that of Lewis Gilles and Company, a preceding organisation. None of this is confirmed as no specimens are known to have survived.
