Notes:

The 1916 mule halfpenny is not known in any grade better than very fine. The obverse die for the Indian Quarter Anna coin was accidently installed in a coining press with the reverse of the Australian halfpenny die during production at the Calcutta Mint in India.

The coin was first identified in 1965. At first, collectors were sceptical because almost 50 years had elapsed before the discovery was made. The answer probably lies in the fact that there were few collectors interested in Australian coins prior to the announced changeover to decimal currency. In those last years before conversion, millions of coins of every denomination were examined by a huge number of new collectors.

Publicity given to the original find soon resulted in a few more surfacing. In 1967, after a great deal of examination, an article in the January edition of Coin Review stated:

'1916 Mules Genuine - World Experts Agree'

The article disclosed the experts as being the British Museum, Spink and Sons and Howard Linecar and erased any doubt as to the recognition and authenticity of the coin.
