A cupro-nickel striking, the trial proof was produced by the Royal Mint, London using a British florin planchet with a finely reeded edge. The use of the base metal, copper nickel, was caused by the unavailability of silver planchets - which had not been used for general circulating coinage since the silver standard was abandoned in 1947.
Four examples of this trial issue exist. In 1986, one of these was purchased by the Museum of Victoria at a Spink-Noble auction for $4,100.
