Today, the service covers an enormous area and still sparse population with an efficiency which is unique among the world's ariel medical providers. There are 17 bases throughout the Australian continent servicing approximately 7.1 million square kilometres. On average, 82 flights covering 32,500 kilometres are made each day, giving testimony to the dedication of the staff of the Service.
| The reverse design depicts a radio operator on an outback station and an early Royal Flying Doctor Service bi-plane. The coin was issued, encapsulated and housed in an orange leatherette, hinged lid presentation case protected within a colourful cardboard box. The uncirculated version of the 1998 Royal Flying Doctor Service Australian five dollars is a significantly smaller bi-metal coin. | ![]() |
