This coin was struck to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It was distributed in a clear plastic wallet accompanied by a $2 Telstra phonecard.

The proof version of the 1998 Royal Flying Doctor Service Australian five dollars is a significantly larger coin struck on an Aluminium Bronze blank.
