1998 Silver Crown FIFTY CENTS |

First struck in 1937, Australia's only commemorative crown (five shilling) piece celebrated the coronation of George VI - an event marked in Australia by street decorations, church services and events ranging from dignified dinners to kindergarten parties.

The coin's significance as a commemorative piece, however, was diminished by its release again the following year. Never popular with the public because of its weight, the crown became much sought after during the 1960's, when the value of silver rose and many were smuggled out of the country and melted down. The coin was designed by George Kruger Gray.
