Notes:

The two horizontal bars behind the Emu's head were caused by a filled area on the master puncheon manufactured in London and sent to the Canberra Mint to be used in creating the working dies. The problem was noticed before production began.

Engraving to rectify the flaw was performed on every working die - it would have been impossible to add back missing metal to the master die. On a very small number of 50 cent coins, the bars can still be seen, indicating that the engraving was not a complete success on some of the working dies. The problem resurfaced in the striking of some 1979 and 1980 fifty cent coins.
