Notes:

Most of what is known about this piece is deduction or guesswork. Degraves is believed to have known Matthew Boulton's son, who then ran the Soho Mint in Birmingham. It is thus likely that this was where the tokens were struck. Mintage is believed to have been around 2,000.

Peter Degraves, an engineer, and his brother-in-law Hugh McIntosh, chartered the Hope to carry them and their families to Tasmania. On the first attempt, the ship was damaged in a storm and returned to Britain. Their property was seized when complaints against them were made by other passengers. The lawsuites were eventually settled but the long delay meant that they did not recommence the journey until late in 1823.

The tokens brought by the partners appear to have been lost somewhere along the way before their business was operational in August, 1824. Today, around 50 specimens are thought to have survived. Most are in VF or better condition which tends to support the theory that they were not issued for circulation.
