Kalgoorlie, in the middle of the semi-desert that covers most of the western two-thirds of Australia, sits on one of the biggest gold finds in history. Known as the Golden Mile, it was first discovered in the outback town of Kalgoorlie more than 100 years ago. It drew miners and prospectors from all over the world to seek their fortunes on the hot dusty goldfields. It is still producing gold today, but the operations are much more intensive and high-powered. The discovery of gold in the area eventually led to the establishment of the Perth Mint. The colonial government of the day saw an opportunity to turn the vast deposits of high quality ore found there into sovereigns for the British Empire. Today Kalgoorlie is a modern thriving town, dominated by the gold industry, but also home to a thriving tourist industry. The design on the privy mark depicts the hands of an old prospector panning for gold. In the background is the silhouette of a classic 'poppet head' that sits at the top of a mine shaft, a shape that is ubiquitous to any Australian goldfield.
