Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is located right in the heart of Australia in the Northern Territory, close to Alice Springs. Uluru is one of the biggest single rocks in the world rising 348 meters above the surface with an estimated two-thirds beneath the surface, and with a girth of over nine kilometers. 'The Rock', as it is colloquially known in Australia, is owned and managed by the local Anangu Australian Aboriginal people, who are the traditional owners of over 50% of the Northern Territory. Uluru has deep cultural significance for them, and is managed on their behalf by Commonwealth Parks Australia. The culture of the local people is believed to date back more than 60,000 years. The deep significance of Uluru to the Aboriginal people is symbolised in the design of the privy mark on the coin which shows the profile of a tribal elder looking over the rock. In the sky can be seen the stars that make up the Southern Cross, which features on the current Australian flag.
