 | The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen depicts a wistful, yearning creature that wants to be human and to have an immortal soul. The statue is placed on a dolmen of granite out of the water, undoubtedly contributing to its fame. The small islands in the channel between the islands of Zealand and Amager provide a wonderful background to the statue.
For almost a thousand years, merchant ships have sailed the waters upon which The Little Mermaid gazes. The unveiling of the statue took place on 22 August, 1913. |
The subject of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale, The Little Mermaid became one of the most delightful inspirations in world literature, and won the author immortal fame. The story has been translated into 108 different languages.
