The 1997 one ounce The Little Mermaid Privy Kookaburra & Chick $1 silver coin is the tenth in a series of 15 privy marked coins released by the Perth Mint over a three year period to celebrate the countries forming the European Union. This coin honours Denmark who joined the European Union in 1973. | The statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen depicts a wistful, yearning creature that wants to be human and to have an immortal soul. The statue is placed on a dolmen of granite out of the water, undoubtedly contributing to its fame. The small islands in the channel between the islands of Zealand and Amager provide a wonderful background to the statue. For almost a thousand years, merchant ships have sailed the waters upon which The Little Mermaid gazes. The unveiling of the statue took place on 22 August, 1913. |
