Notes:

The 1997 one ounce The Colosseum Privy Kookaburra & Chick $1 silver coin is the eighth in a series of 15 privy marked coins released by the Perth Mint over a three year period to celebrate the countries forming the European Union. This coin honours Italy who joined the European Union in 1958.

Built of brick, concrete and stone, the Colosseum has four storeys and is oval in shape.

Originally designed to be an outdoor theatre capable of seating 50,000 spectators on marble and wooden benches, it lies in ruins today in the centre of modern Rome. Also called the Flavian Ampitheatre, the Colosseum still ranks as one of the finest examples of Roman architecture and engineering. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Vespasian between AD69 and AD79. For the next 300 years, it was the site of simulated naval battles, combat between gladiators, and battles between men and wild animals which were housed in a network of passages and chambers below the floor.
