Notes:

The 1997 one ounce Monument of the Discoveries Privy Kookaburra & Chick $1 silver coin is the seventh in a series of 15 privy marked coins released by the Perth Mint over a three year period to celebrate the countries forming the European Union. This coin honours Portugal who joined the European Union in 1986.
The monument is a 50-metere high concrete monolistic symbol of a 'Caravela', the ship used by early Portugese explorers in search of new worlds. There is a small exhibition space within, and the structure is flanked by two ramps along which are 16 statues representing famous personalities related to the discoveries such as Vasco da Gama and Alfonso de Albuquerque. The top of the Monument offers fine views of the Tejo River and the Belem Tower.
The Monument of Discoveries was erected in 1960 to replace the original that was built in 1940 out of provisional material. This was to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. A statue of Henry appears on the prow of the 'Caravela'
