Notes:

The 1997 one ounce Elk Privy Kookaburra & Chick $1 silver coin is the sixth in a series of 15 privy marked coins released by the Perth Mint over a three year period to celebrate the countries forming the European Union. This coin honours Finland who joined the European Union in 1995.
The elk, also known as moose, is a magnificent animal, standing up to two metres at the shoulders and three and a half metres in length. It can weigh up to 550 kilograms and is found all over Finland, except in the northernmost areas. The elk's fur is brownish-black on the upper parts, and greyish-brown on the belly and lower legs. A flap of skin and fur called a bell hangs from its throat.
The male elk, or bull, has antlers that are shaped like the palm of a hand with many short pointed fingers. They shed the antlers in winter and grow new ones in spring. In ancient times, the elk was probably regarded as a tribal emblem and was feared as a totem animal. Today, the elk population is still very strong and the roaming elk is a tourist drawcard.
