Notes:

The 1997 one ounce Edison Privy Kookaburra & Chick $1 silver coin was distributed, encapsulated, in a black leatherette, hinged-lid presentation case and accompanied by a numbered certificate. The coin was released by the Perth Mint to commemmorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of American inventor Thomas Alva Edison. The privy mark depicts one of his most famous inventions, the electric light bulb.
Thomas Alva Edison (11 February, 1847 - 8 October, 1931) was awarded the Congressional Medal in 1928. Part of the inscription on the award read ' He illuminated the path of progress by his inventions".

Indeed, Edison's inventions illuminated mankind - the phonograph, motion pictures, the microphone and the carbon transmitter, to name a few. But it is the incandescent electric light that is considered Edison's greatest contribution to mankind.

The first practical light made history on 21 October, 1879, by completing a burning test that lasted 40 hours. He went on to invent and design a complete electric light system from power house to lamps, making possible the 'Age of Electricity'.

Edison was born in Milan, Ohio on 11 February, 1847 and died in West Orange, New Jersey on 8 October, 1931, aged 64. His most famous quote is still heard today - 'Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent persperation'.
