![]() | The Perth Mint foundation stone was laid on 23 September, 1896, by Western Australia's premier of the time, Sir John Forrest. The occasion was marked by pomp and splendour and by great controversy as the plans for the building had still not been approved by London. |
| Sir John Forrest began promoting the idea of the Perth Mint when he saw valuable income leaving the State at the time of the local gold boom. He urged the British Government to establish a branch of the Royal Mint in Perth to refine gold from the Eastern Goldfields and to mint it into gold sovereigns and half sovereigns to be used as currency in the colony. With the laying of the Perth Mint foundation stone, the Premier's dream was realised. The construction of the building however, was troubled by a series of setbacks and it was almost three years before it opened for business on 20 June, 1899. | ![]() |
