Notes:

The 1996 one ounce Swan River Tricentennial Privy Kookaburra in Flight $1 silver coin was distributed, encapsulated, in a royal blue velvet, hinged-lid presentation case and accompanied by a numbered certificate. The coin was released by the Perth Mint to commemorate the Tricentennial Year of the European naming of the Swan River and Rottnest Island..

Western Australia's capital city, Perth, is characterised by the magnificent Swan River and the nearby island of Rottnest. These well-known landmarks were given their European names three hundred years ago, in December 1696, by Dutch explorer Willem de Vlamingh.

De Vlamingh was on a voyage of scientific exploration and, together with a crew of 194 men, spent seven months at sea before their ship came across the island that de Vlamingh named Rottnest.

The expedition also explored the Swan River before heading to Batavia with maps of Rottnest Island and the Swan River, the first maps of the area seen by Europeans. The journey was also the last of the major Dutch voyages along Australia's west coast.
